50 shades of white

Huge snowflakes are dancing outside…

How soon we will be glancing far and wide

To see the perfect spotless world

Snow-covered, wonderful and cold?

The City of the Future

IMG_20171130_160417

Denver is a city of the future or the past, I am not really sure. It has some absolutely mysterious places like Cheesman Park or Brown Palace. Also the longest and evilest street in the US, i.e. Colfax, is right here for you. Check it out when the main construction projects are over and you can actually enjoy your visit, haha.IMG_20171204_185127_308

Colorado is a great place to travel any time and not just because everyone talks about it. It has a lot to offer for hikers, climbers, skiers and all kind of thrill seekers. The city of Denver and the state of Colorado can and will be immensely enjoyable if you are informed and prepared well. Here is a list of things to consider before visiting.

  1. Plan to stay an extra day or two before you climb the fourteeners. Time to acclimate will make your trip 10 times better.
  2. Experience the local music and art scene. Dazzle, Nocturne and Mercury cafe are great for jazz, blues and more. Denver Art Museum and Kirkland Museum of Decorative Art are definitely worth your time.
  3. Check out local breweries like Coors, Prost and Tivoli. There are 95 more names I can’t remember, but I am sure you will find something to your taste.
  4. Eat. Places to eat are so multiple and diverse, I am easily lost. Mexican food is delicious and authentic here, try local cafes and enjoy the vibe. My favorites are: Viet’s, Wokano’s, Pho Haus ($), Pete’s Kitchen, Irish Rover, La Cour Bistro and Parisi ($$).
  5. Walk. 16 Street Mall is a major attraction for tourists who love shopping, rooftop bars, cabaret, ballet and movies to catch the spirit of the city.
  6. Celebrate. Summer time is full of festivals and all kind of fun events, check out the calendar to choose something to suit your taste at Denver.org/events.
  7. Hike. Red Rocks, Lookout Mountain and Garden of the Gods will be easy nearby nature spots to enjoy. If you are willing to spend some time driving Mount Evans and Pike’s Peak are two car accessible fourteeners, check out the weather before you go.
  8. Drink lots of water. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses. Bring comfortable shoes / clothes.

For transportation you can ride a bike, walk, get an Uber or try RTD for some destinations. Rent a car to explore Colorado on your own or take a train to Granby which is one of the train accessible destinations. Denver is a city of the future, soon it might turn into a fairy tale and I believe it will.

The Fog City

sf 1

Last summer we were in San Francisco twice and I can complain about the laws of my embassy which was the reason of the trip, but not gonna lie, it was worth it!

The city is huge and so diverse, you almost feel like you are visiting at least three different places for the price of one. It’s an awesome destination for visual artists and designers in search of inspiration, students and business people looking for new opportunities, foreigners and locals chasing exotic experiences to die for.

  1. Chinatown is one of the seven wonders to see, taste, smell and try. Don’t rush through it, be ready for adventure and lot’s of fun here. Have at least 2 hours to waste and trust me they will not be wasted.
  2. Pier 39 famous for its fat and shiny dwellers is always crowded and free. Enjoy the sea lions and be ready for tons of folks that come and go during the performance.
  3. Ride a cable car to feel the vibe of public unity in a big city. Lots of people will try to share it with you but it’s unique and fun, I have heard.
  4. Alcatratz is one of the biggest attractions because everyone wants to see the prison and imagine how they would escape from it, haha. This one needs to be booked in advance.
  5. The Palace of Arts is a huge architectural achievement built to inspire photo artists, lazy tourists and stray lovers. Walk there before the sunset to get the most out of it.
  6. Climb the Telegraph Hill chasing the elusive pack of parrots, we didn’t get to see them but you might be luckier. Stunning panorama is guaranteed.
  7. Golden Gate Park is something not to miss, wear comfortable shoes and an extra coat, you never know how long you would wanna stay there. Japanese Tea Garden is a part of it which is not free but well worth your time.

Transportation is multiple, you can rent a bike, take a bus or get an Uber. To stay somewhere nice and cheap try Air B&B. Be prepared for windy and rainy weather, bring warm clothes because it’s never too hot in San Francisco. Check out Trader Joe’s for snacks and drinks, they offer good price for the value. Explore the city on foot to find something by chance!

Twin Cities

IMG_20171229_201538

In winter Minneapolis is cold and windy but feels really nice, Minnesota ice is everywhere pure and white. The city is planned with such precision, you can’t believe it, downtown is glam and glitzy. European influence is obvious when you dive into architecture, fashion and taste. They say it’s multinational and I can tell it should be really appealing to many. Rivers and lakes make it even better especially in summer, I bet you can easily find the place to hike there. Otherwise, parks and gardens in the twin cities will come in handy to cool and shade a tired tourist.

Busy streets and skyways make it the city of the future, at least you hope to come back one day to love it even more. Maybe in warm season when not only it’s beautiful but also walkable. Can you imagine trying to wander every single street and enjoy being a part of the promising city life? Might be a bit scary at night but still fun. Music scene has a lot to offer, culture and art are there to suit any taste. Dine in every single café you liked and peek into majestic churches and cathedrals just for a second. You might discover a new world!

My dream is to visit more American icons like Chicago and LA. Will they be all the same or not? Stunning architecture, fancy shops, beautiful people… You probably have to stay for a week or two to really feel the atmosphere. Seattle is another place I want to visit one day, I wish we had this kind of freedom… travel always brings the sense of adventure, it’s like a gust of wind in the face that brings you back to life. You look around with your eyes wide open and never stop wondering…

Suzy

The week was full of fun. People, places, pleasures… Glamorous life of a young celebrity is everybody’s dream you would think, but she wasn’t really impressed by gifts and flowers her wannabe boyfriends showered her with. Watching the sun goes down and daydreaming of an empty city guarded by stray dogs and friendly crows has become her hobby. The sound of silence was her favorite thing after all the rehearsals and music lessons she was required to take. Language and art classes were optional so she could enjoy them a bit more.

Some days flying first class was like a second job for her, she grew to hate it so fast. Schedules and itineraries were always in the way as if someone or something else owned her life. When will I start living for real? – she would ask herself time and again. Most folks would do anything to have the luxury of being famous, rich and beautiful. But she had another dream…

What a weird world we live in! People only want what they can’t have. If they are single they try to get married, if they are married they want a divorce. In the crowd we always seek for privacy and staying home alone inspires the need to go out. Contradictory human nature is there to challenge and make us miserable. In winter we want sunny warm days and in a hot season we are dreaming of snow and frost.

It was a middle of December, two years since she became a star. Holiday season with all its charm was in full swing, the time to make wishes and wait for miracles to happen. Suzy was hoping to run away from her successful career in show business and become a world traveler, hitch hiker and camper. No schedules, no flights, no obligations… Sweet, sweet dreams to be living a simple life of a nobody.

November Rain

I stood in the middle of nowhere catching the rain drops by my mouth. It was getting dark and I knew it was time to go home but where is home? My thoughts were rushing through bits and pieces of old childhood memories capturing every single house I lived in, which one of them could I call home? My father left when I was six, not having a home we moved to another country. My stepfather disappeared right at the end of high school, I moved to a bigger city for college. Not much to miss as the house we were living in was one of the most restrictive places for a teen spirit. It hasn’t changed much so I keep wondering why do I have to belong somewhere where I actually FEEL at home?

The time between Halloween and Thanksgiving is always full of vague memories and nostalgia. The spooky reality of past and bright promises of the future leave you always somewhere in between, in limbo. Living your dreams between the cultures and countries, childhood and adulthood, seriousness and serenity, idleness and productivity, beginning and end. Black and white reality gets boring more than anything else and the only escape is to create, to make something brand new.

The process of creating is healing in itself since you lose touch with time and place, liberating your brain and helping your body to get rid of stress and worry only about the final outcome. The art of knitting or painting can be highly appreciated in anticipation of the holiday season. The gift of writing is also greatly needed to be able to compose those Christmas letters that only happen once a year. Crafts will come in handy to decorate your place for the whole month to enjoy. They say that home is where you make it, sounds like one has to be quite a maker after all.

Magic Tea

When you want to have a private conversation with someone just invite them for a cup of tea. It is always a pleasure to chat with an old or a new friend while drinking something as delicious as green, black, white or herbal tea.

I have been wanting to order a tea ceremony for a long time now since I really dreamed of something authentic. You know what, it is coming in May next year fingers crossed, or should I use legs crossed instead?

In my family tea drinking is like a religion, food for your soul. We are really serious about having it at least 5 times a day in spite of the season. The reason for it is to get enough caffeine in your body to keep it going. Or maybe having enough meaningful talks with each other to feel loved and appreciated?

Tea drinking is especially good in cold weather. Some people add sugar or honey into it. Some like it really hot with lemon but one thing they all have in common is that time stops when you indulge yourself in a cup of tea. Say, you are having a bad day at work or the weather is bringing you down, or you name it. After having just one cup of a good tea the world around you gets better. No you don’t have to add vodka into it but some people do so.
